What We Store

Your library, reading sessions, collected words, saved lines, reading plan, settings and the photos you take in Faria (a book’s cover, a day’s keepsake) are kept on your device, and synced to your account when you’re signed in so they follow you to another device. Signing in is optional; if you create an account with Sign in with Apple or email, we store your email address to identify your account.

Speech & Microphone

Reading sessions listen for what you say to Faria: words you ask about, questions about your book, the lines you read aloud to save, and spoken commands such as “pause this session.” Quiet reading stays on your device: audio is only sent anywhere while you’re actually speaking. Those moments of speech are streamed securely to our speech-recognition provider, Soniox, to be turned into text, identified only by an anonymous code, never your account. When enhanced recognition isn’t available, sessions use Apple’s speech recognition instead. Faria doesn’t store your microphone recordings.

On our website you can try the session’s phrases with your own voice. That uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition, which may send what you say to the browser’s maker (Apple for Safari, Google for Chrome) to be turned into text. The text stays on the page, where it picks one of Faria’s recorded replies; nothing you say there is sent to us or stored.

Definitions, Answers & Saved Lines

When you look up a word, the word goes to our definitions service with your book’s title, author and language, so the meaning fits what you’re reading. When you ask about the story, your question goes with the same details about your book, the page you’ve told Faria you’re on, the passage you read aloud just before asking, and, for a follow-up, the last few questions and answers, so the answer stays within what you’ve read. When you save a line by reading it aloud, its text is tidied (punctuation in, stumbles out) before it’s kept.

These requests are processed on our behalf by an AI language provider, and the spoken replies by speech providers. Some definitions come with a picture, found through Wikipedia; your phone loads it from Wikimedia Commons. All of this is used only to produce what you asked for.

Adding Books & Your Plan

When you scan a shelf, its photos are sent to the AI language provider to read the titles on the spines; we don’t keep them. A title you type is looked up in Apple’s book catalogue and Open Library, and, if neither knows it, passed to the AI language provider to work out which book you meant. Covers and book details come from Open Library, Google Books and Apple. To order your reading plan, the titles, authors and lengths of the books in it, and the minutes you’ve read in each, are sent to the AI language provider.

Screen Time

If you connect Screen Time, Faria uses it only to keep the apps you pick shut until your daily reading is done. The apps you choose stay on your device, and Faria never receives your app-usage data.

Membership

Faria Pro subscriptions are purchased through Apple, and Apple processes your payment. We never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status, so RevenueCat receives purchase information such as your subscription state and an anonymous user identifier. If you installed Faria from one of our ads in the App Store, Apple tells RevenueCat which ad campaign it was, so we can see which ads work. This uses Apple’s own ad attribution, which doesn’t track you across other apps or websites.

How Faria Is Used

To see where new readers get stuck, the app records a handful of anonymous steps: which setup pages were reached, whether the demo finished, and whether the membership page was opened or closed. Each step carries a random code made for this purpose, the app version and the time, and nothing that identifies you, your account or your books. Our website counts visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn’t identify visitors.

To stop abuse and keep costs fair, Faria counts its requests each day against your account, or an anonymous device code when you’re signed out, and for some requests made while signed out, against the network address they came from.

Bug Reports & Feedback

If you send a bug report or feedback from the app, we keep what you write, the email address you give (if any), your account if you’re signed in, and your app version, iOS version and device model, so we can follow up and fix the problem. A copy reaches our support inbox through our email provider.

Third Parties

Synced data is stored with our hosting provider, Supabase. Beyond the services named above, we share data with service providers only as needed to run Faria, and each one is required to protect your data with safeguards at least as protective as this policy. No third party may use your data for its own advertising, and we don’t sell it to anyone.

Data Retention & Deletion

Your synced data is kept for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account and all synced data at any time in the app under Settings, or by emailing [email protected]. Deleting the app removes all data stored on your device. You can withdraw permissions like the microphone, speech recognition, and Screen Time anytime in your device’s Settings.
