How to read instead of scrolling

Updated October 18, 2026

To read instead of scrolling, take the phone out of the moment and put a book in its place. Read at the time you usually scroll (in bed, after dinner), keep the book where your phone usually sits, and block the apps you scroll until you’ve read for the day. Faria can hold the apps you choose closed until your daily reading goal is met.

Swap the cue, not just the habit

Scrolling happens at the same moments every day: waking up, the couch after dinner, bed. Those moments are the best reading slots you have, because the habit of picking something up is already there. Put the book in the phone’s spot and let the cue do the work.

Make the phone harder to reach

  • Charge it in another room overnight, and keep a book on the nightstand.
  • Turn on a Focus mode while you read so nothing buzzes.
  • Set Screen Time limits on the apps that eat your evenings.
  • Or block them outright until you’ve read, with an app that unlocks them when you’re done.

Block apps until you’ve read

Time-based limits are easy to wave away. A block tied to reading is different: the apps open once you’ve read, so the way back to them runs through the book. In Faria you pick the apps and write your own reason, which shows on the block screen (“I want my evenings back from my phone”). Reach today’s goal and they unlock. Blocking is optional, and everything else in Faria works without it.

Keep the phone useful, not tempting

If the phone has to stay nearby, give it a job that serves the book. With Faria open in a session, the phone answers questions about words and the story out loud, saves lines you read aloud, and keeps the clock, so it helps you stay with the page instead of pulling you off it.

Start small

Ten minutes of reading in place of ten minutes of scrolling is a real win, and an easy one to repeat. Let the goal grow once the swap feels normal. See how to read more for the rest of the habit.

Questions

How do I stop scrolling and read instead?

Read at the moments you usually scroll, keep a book where your phone usually sits, and block the apps you scroll until you’ve read for the day. Start with ten minutes and grow from there.

Is there an app that locks social media until I read?

Yes. Faria on iPhone can keep the apps you choose closed until you’ve met your daily reading goal, then unlocks them automatically. Blocking is optional.

Does Screen Time help with reading more?

It helps by limiting the apps that take your reading time. It doesn’t know whether you’ve read, so the limits are easy to dismiss; a block that lifts only after reading is harder to skip.
